Have you started?! As we go through the book of Hebrews, we encourage you to do some reading on your own daily. This will help us to be prepared as we study it in a group. See our study schedule here. (We're going to try to knock out chapters 1 & 2 this Friday!)
Bible Study Tips:
- Begin with prayer. We need God's help to understand His word. (Psalm 119:18 - "Open my eyes that I may see the wonderful things in your law.")
- Read the passage multiple times. (Psalm 1:1-2 - "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.")
- Meditate on the following questions:
1) What is the passage saying?
2) What truths are taught in this passage? (These are principles that would be evident in other parts of the Bible as well.)
3) What command(s) is given in the passage?
4) What promise(s) is given in the passage?
5) How does this truth/command/promise apply to my life? Make sure that your application agrees with the other truths/commands/promises in the rest of the Bible.
There is much more that could be said, but these tips should get you started well on your personal bible study. As you read, you'll find that some passages are more difficult to understand. Don't be afraid to use additional resources to help you understand!
Bible Study Resources:
BibleGateway.com : Read passages online or read the same passages in different translations. Reading multiple translation helps to get to the original meaning of the text.
BibleStudyTools.com : Many English translation of the original Greek or Hebrew word isn't sufficient to help us capture the original meaning of the text. Use the concordance to search for the Greek meaning of the word to get a fuller understanding of a word.
Matthew Henry's concise commentary on the book of Hebrews : Verse by verse, Matthew Henry expounds on the meaning of the text. Originally written in 1706 so it's a great brain and literary workout as well.
John MacArthur's series of sermons on Hebrews : This sermon series is great in helping to put the verses in biblical perspective and application. He also has series on other books of the Bible.
If you still have lingering questions about the passage, bring them to our study on Friday! Feel free to email them to charis@sgvconnections.com or leave a comment here as well. We can't wait to study with you!
Bible study is no easy task, but by the grace of God, we'll be able to do it! Be encouraged by the words in 1 Peter 1:22-26:
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, all men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever. And this is the word that was preached to you.
Happy Studying!
